View Full Version : Hair loss

I have been following a low-carb diet for the past 4 months and the good
news is that it is actually working me. The bad news is that I have
experienced some hair loss which is has been a bit of a shock since I have
very thick hair. After doing an exhaustive internet search I have found that
this may be somewhat common but not really due to a low-carb lifestyle but
due to a quick weight loss. I have lost weight in the past following other
programs but never noticed this before. Some of the supplements that I am
considering are: Biotin, N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC), glutathione and lecithin.
Has anyone experienced this and if so have you tried these supplements and
did they work? My plan is to run right out and buy these but I figured I
would bounce this off the board.
Thanks for your time.

I've been losing hair too. I can see it getting thinner in the top front.
Maybe low carb has improved my testosterone levels. The hair loss seems to
be consistent with male pattern baldness.

As long as you are getting the basic nutrients you need, I doubt the extra
supplements will do you any good, but its your money.
I lost a TON of hair around the 4 month mark. I was losing nearly a pound a
day at that point, so I'm sure that's the reason. I don't blame low-carb, I
blame my own impatience. I was still under 20 carbs and severely restricting
calories. Now, half the hairs on my head are now under two inches long,
while the rest are over two feet long, so it is definitely coming back with
a vengeance.

Thanks for all the replies/feedback.
Impressive results Vic! Great inspiration to continue on this program.
This makes more sense now as I have to admit I have also been impatient and
once I experienced the initial results in the first 2-3 weeks I have pretty
much have stayed on course and haven't attempted to increase my carbs or
calories but I don' feel deprived at all.

Paul

that is very scary, what about the rest of your family??? can you blame it
on DNA or old age approaching?
who would have thought?

Hi G
I have been on the low carb WOE for 15 months now. I had an experience with
losing hair as well but it was NOT due to the program but instead, due to a
certain medication In was taking.
My suggestion would be to review all meds you are on, look them up on the
computer to see what their side affects are. That's how I found out.
I stopped the meds and my hair grew all back.
Good Luck!
