View Full Version : My followup at the Dr's
Lynne A
June 24th, 2004, 05:44 PM
I went in this morning for my follow-up appt. to the Symbyax RX. The Dr and
I discussed the risks and benefits, and we decided that ATM, the benefits
outweigh the risks from this med. I feel human again, and it's been years
and years. He DID prescribe me a meter so I can keep an eye on my BG levels
(Bless his heart! that will save me a few bucks) and I go back in next week,
then if things are going ok, we will drop that frequency and I'll just go
back periodically with my BG numbers.
This is all good, but my visit DID turn up something that I don't know what
to think of-I'm still losing weight! I had been maintaining for a few
months, no big fluctuations, but when they weighed me today, I was down to
128! Now, I don't mind losing a few more lbs, but what do I do if it
continues? I surely don't want to consume more carbs with the risk from my
meds, but if I keep losing 5 lbs a week, I'm gonna disappear soon<LOL>
Increase the fats, maybe? Increase the carbs, but test a LOT? Just not
sure what to do at this point.

Why not increase fats, or meats, or nuts, or etc? If carbs are a problem,
then simply eating more LC food should address the weight loss problem. I
don't see a problem unless I'm missing something. Also, it is a rare soul
indeed who continues to lose weight indefinitely while alive and still
eating. Perhaps you're just thinking out loud here....

Sorta thinking out loud, but also wanting input, never hurts. I'm leaning
towards increasing fats too, it seems a lot safer option. At least until I
can use the meter some and get a feel for which carbs don't increase BG. I
don't really *think* the weight loss will continue indefinitely, but then
again, I didn't think I'd eaten anywhere NEAR that level of caloric deficit
lately, either. Actually, I thought I'd probably be UP a bit from last
week, I've been eating a lot.
Thanks for your input on this, Roger!

I'm glad you're feeling so much better! And happy that you'll be able to
keep a close eye on your numbers.

Based on Crash's experience, I wouldn't worry about losing too much weight.
In addition to closely monitoring your BG, keep an eye out for weight
creep.

Thanks, Damsel, me too! So nice to feel like ME again<G> And I feel a LOT
calmer about the diabetes issue now that I will be able to test regularly-I
can weigh the pros and cons with a better degree of knowledge. The
depression has had me slacking, but the better I feel, the more pro-active I
am about my health.

I certainly will, I just was a bit floored. Last week, same day, I weighed
in at 135 with BIG honkin boots on-so I went with 133 as about right. So I
really wasn't expecting to see a loss of much more than the weight of those
boots. Might be time to invest in a good scale as well as having the meter.
I never worried about it before, if I went to the Dr I could see where I
was, and that was good enough (otherwise I probably would have obsessed).
Now, though, I am thinking maybe I should.

I got my Tanita at www.drugstore.com . At the time, it was the lowest
price I could find anywhere. They had good service, as I recall.

I can't remember if you're familiar with the Bernstein program, but
maybe the answer is to add low-glycemic-index carbs slowly (and double
check with the BG meter)?

Excellent point. Lynne, if you treat yourself like a diabetic from the
beginning, you're more likely to avoid actually becoming one.
This reminds me. I still haven't finished reading the book completely.
I'll get back on it after we get a few things under control at home. I'm
intrigued by his chapter on self-hypnosis, but I haven't read it yet.

Thanks Carol. Which one did you go with? It will be a few weeks, my
budget's already screaming this month, but hopefully I can soon.

Yes, I'm familiar in passing, through other posters here, and it sounds like
a possibility. The main issue is that I already had been adding carbs, and
had hit an average around 75-100 day, and was maintaining, until recently.
I think I'll up the good fats, and do as you suggest with the carbs.
Basically just play with my levels on both until I hit a stop point
again-perhaps what I considered maintaining was a plateau? So the loss
stalled even though I was below limit in carbs or calories. Lots to think
about, thanks!

That's pretty much the way I was leaning, Damsel, by upping the fats, but-I
think I will still cut my carb levels and then gradually add things back
over time, and eat to the meter. Sound reasonable? I definitely want to
avoid diabetes if I can, but DAMN, my mind is my own again and I am really
loath to give that up!

Sounds perfect! You have a good head on your shoulders. And ... I have no
idea which Tanita I got. All I know is, it was under $40.

Oy, now you're making me blush<LOL> Me mum would surely disagree with you,
but then, I haven't listened to HER for years.ggg
Ahh, the very same model Tanita I was looking at! The cheaper one, just my
speed. I really can't afford to spend a lot, so it's good to hear that that
one will do me. And maybe give John a heart attack, when HE climbs on
it<WEG>
