ok, this poll is just for my own curiosity. i promise it won't be published
anywhere or used for any purpose other than my own edification (and that of
other readers).

this line of questioning was brought on by the "set point" thread, as well
as some other things i've read here.

1. have you been overweight since you were a teenager, or were you thin
when you were younger?

2. where do you tend to carry your fat?

3. does your family tend to be overweight as well?

4. are you diabetic/pre-diabetic?

5. do you have other "obesity related" health concerns (cholesterol, BP,
etc)

6. how well does LC work for you for weight loss?

7. how well does LC work for you for other health reasons?

8. do you plan on continuing this WOE, even after you meet your goal?

in the interest of full disclosure, i'll post my answers too.

1. i've been overweight my whole life.

2. i store fat in my hips and thighs, mostly. i've always had a well
defined waist, even at 210 (my heaviest).

3. yes, my family is mostly overweight.

4. no, i have my blood sugar tested regularly and have never had any
abnormal results.

5. nope, good cholesterol, good BP, no heart problems, none of the other
health issues associated with obesity.

6. it worked great for the first few months, but now i find that i'm pretty
much stuck between 173-179 (yes, i fluctuate that much from day to day), or
a US size 14. even went back to phase 1 and still didn't loose any.

7. i have fibromyalgia, and LC helps to minimize my IBS symptoms.

8. yes, i find that it's easier to eat healthy foods if i have a good set
of "rules", and South Beach offers me rules i can live with.

thanks for your input...

Ive always been a little heavier than average, but I gained most of my
weight (80lbs) quickly over a 4 year period in my early 20's. Vegetarianism
is what did it for me :-(
Im 25 now.

> 2. where do you tend to carry your fat?

Tummy/hips mainly

> 3. does your family tend to be overweight as well?

Not at all - Im the exception. My sisters are both very thin, and my mum and
dad are quite petite. Sometimes I wonder if Im adopted! ;-) My Aunt has
struggled with her weight though, so I guess I take after her. We are the
only ones in the family strangely enough.

> 4. are you diabetic/pre-diabetic?

No, thankfully

> 5. do you have other "obesity related" health concerns (cholesterol, BP,
> etc)

My blood pressure was a bit high but nothing too serious

>
> 6. how well does LC work for you for weight loss?

So far its worked really well - slow, steady, healthy weight loss, no
hunger. However Ive never tried to lose weight before, so I dont have
anything to compare it to

> 7. how well does LC work for you for other health reasons?

I have never really had any other health problems, so I cant really
comment - sorry!

> 8. do you plan on continuing this WOE, even after you meet your goal?

Absolutely - I know its the only way not to end up in the same boat, and I
dont think it will be hard to continue.

Have a great day!

I was thin for my skeletal system, but I'm built like a dinosaur, so I
wasn't small like my friends, and considered myself fat, but I wasn't.

>2. where do you tend to carry your fat?

Belly and butt.

Just the women.

>4. are you diabetic/pre-diabetic?

Type 2

>5. do you have other "obesity related" health concerns (cholesterol, BP,

Both of the above, but LC will straighten that out.

>6. how well does LC work for you for weight loss?

Good. I lose at a moderate, steady rate.

>7. how well does LC work for you for other health reasons?

Improved lipids and blood sugar control.

>8. do you plan on continuing this WOE, even after you meet your goal?

Yup!

Thin.

Hips & thighs.

> 3. does your family tend to be overweight as well?

If not kept in check, yes; it doesn't usually go much more than 200 lbs, though,
so it's not necessarily what would be considered morbid obesity.

> 4. are you diabetic/pre-diabetic?

Not yet.

> 5. do you have other "obesity related" health concerns (cholesterol, BP,

No.

> 6. how well does LC work for you for weight loss?

VERY well.

> 7. how well does LC work for you for other health reasons?

Also VERY well. IBS symptoms have disappeared (#1 reason for ME to STAY low-
carb). Reflux only happens about once a month, is MUCH milder and seems to be
hormonally-related. I have several joint injuries (especially bad in the feet)
and losing weight has made a BIG difference in chronic pain. As far as my feet
(and back) go, the less weight I have to carry around the better.

> 8. do you plan on continuing this WOE, even after you meet your goal?

Absolutely! I FEEL so much better now that I can't IMAGINE going back to high-
carb eating on a regular basis.

maintenance isn't hard to hack; I think much of what you learn and modify
about your behavior sticks with you even if you get much less "strict". For
example, since the "first time around" I don't touch any sugar

Thin until about age 24.

> 2. where do you tend to carry your fat?

Mostly belly.

Mom's side yes. Dad's side no.

> 4. are you diabetic/pre-diabetic?

No.

No cholesterol problems. Borderline BP.

> 6. how well does LC work for you for weight loss?

It's the most successful I've tried so far.

> 7. how well does LC work for you for other health reasons?

Very good. Sense of well being, sleeping habits, exercise
habits all improved. Afternoon slump...what's that???

> 8. do you plan on continuing this WOE, even after you meet your goal?

Of course, it's a WOE, permanently.

I gained some weight when I hit puberty. Not obese, but definitely on the
chubbier side. In my later teens I lost it by restricting my calories. I
felt like hell, but I didn't want to gain it back. I kept it off, but
developed low blood sugar and hormonal problems later on. i often wonder if
my poor eating habits helped contribute to the latter.

> 2. where do you tend to carry your fat?

Pretty evenly distributed.

> 3. does your family tend to be overweight as well?

My mom has always been as skinny as a stick and has had no remarkable
health issues. My father gained a bit of weight after he retired from the
army. He lost 30 lbs after he had a heart attack. His heart attack was
caused by an arrythmia and tends to run in the family on his side. It seems
to affect the men and not the women.

> 4. are you diabetic/pre-diabetic?

No, but I have reactive hypoglycemia which can lead to further problems if
uncontrolled.

> 5. do you have other "obesity related" health concerns (cholesterol,
> BP, etc)

None.

> 6. how well does LC work for you for weight loss?

I've been on Atkins maintenance for quite awhile. 5'4", 112-115 lbs
depending on the time of day or month. I have a small frame.

> 7. how well does LC work for you for other health reasons?

I no longer suffer from severe hypoglycemic episodes. I still have to eat
frequently, but the food is appropriate for my condition. LC won't cure
hypo, but it definitely keeps it under control.

I started getting hormonal cystic acne in my 20's. It's completely gone
now. I also had some severe depression related to my monthly cycles. This
has stabilized.

I am no longer afraid of food. I eat when I'm hungry and don't when I'm
not. I eat until I'm comfortably full and never worry about it. Quite a
nice thing.

> 8. do you plan on continuing this WOE, even after you meet your goal?

Absolutely. I have no fantasies that I can eat the sugary, processed junk
that I used to and I don't want them. Those "foods" made me extremely ill.

>1. have you been overweight since you were a teenager, or were you thin

I've been thin much of my life (around 110) - and at points in my life simply
average (around 130). Menopause and some stress/grief factors contributed to
my current weight gain. Stress doesn't exactly make me eat, but it makes me
not care so much about watching what I eat or making sure I get exercise like I
should. Add grief into the mix and I have become the heaviest I've ever been
in my life.

>
>2. where do you tend to carry your fat?

hips and legs. And now (going through menopause) notice the weight also going
to the "belly" so to speak.

>
>3. does your family tend to be overweight as well?

All of us have had our heavier times and our very thin times. Well, at least
the women. The men are more consistently of average weight.

>
>4. are you diabetic/pre-diabetic?
No. However my mother is a Type 2 diabetic. She is on a controlled carb diet
- eats 50 carbs at a meal - three meals a day. She also eats low fat and never
has cravings. She wasn't overweight when young (she is 76), but was what I
might describe as pleasingly plump most of her life. She now weighs 116
pounds. She is religious in her eating habits and does NOT go over the
prescribed 50 carbs/meal - ever. And her diabetes is controlled by diet alone.

>
>5. do you have other "obesity related" health concerns (cholesterol, BP,
>etc)

No - none. I have low cholesterol and low blood pressure.

>
>6. how well does LC work for you for weight loss?

Great. I've lost almost thirty pounds and I have no cravings or even desire to
eat "off plan". I know I'm very lucky in this regard. I didn't do induction
and started at 50 carbs a day and worked backwards. The least amount of carbs
I've eaten in a day is around 25. I'm currently working to try and hit 35
carbs/day. I sometimes don't quite make that but generally get to at least 33
a day - at least in this last week.

When I did begin to increase the carbs beginning last week ( thank you Doug,
for your posts) , I lost more weight this last week than any other since I have
been keeping track in Fitday - about two months now. Llast week I lost three
pounds. Fitday has been great for me - but then I'm sort of a numbers person
anyway. My average calorie intake is generally around 1150-1200/day. If I eat
more than that, I'm not hungry the next day and will eat far less calorie-wise
the next day so I try to keep my calorie intake at around 1200.

Also I was taking Vit E made with soy oil. After reading some of Jenny's posts
regarding soy and the thyroid ( I do have a thyroid nodule but my thyroid
function is fine - so far) I stopped taking those and do feel better. So,
thank you Jenny!

>
>7. how well does LC work for you for other health reasons?

I really don't have any health concerns, other than my weight - well, except
that I smoke. Quitting smoking is my next goal, once the weight is off.

>
>8. do you plan on continuing this WOE, even after you meet your goal?

Yes. It seems to suit me. I believe this is the healthiest I've ever eaten
and as importantly, I like eating this way. And I feel really good. It's
amazing to me how sluggish I was when eating in the way I was eating before
beginning LC. Not having that sluggish feeling is wonderful. Also, my
various aches and pains are all but gone. I believe that is due to not eating
sugar. And THAT is wonderful. Exercising has also helped in that regard.

I'd be nuts to go back to eating carbs/sugar in the way I did previous to this.

I was usually 15lbs or so overweight. Sometimes I got down, sometimes I was
back up.

Everywhere. A little more towards my ass.

A few women. More chubby than obese though.

I'm IR.

I had high BP. Not so any more.

Wonderfully. If Dr. Atkins was alive, I'd kiss him.

>7. how well does LC work for you for other health reasons?

See #6. No more heartburn, headaches, sore feet from carting around all that
weight, you name it!

>8. do you plan on continuing this WOE, even after you meet your goal?

I couldn't imagine NOT eating this way for life.

It maintains my weight without much effort, although I am not losing as
fast as some people. I lost faster on Weight Watchers, but only maintained
my goal for 6 months.
>
> 7. how well does LC work for you for other health reasons?

I feel much better on LC instead of low fat. Improved mood and less
mood swings. Increased energy without the after lunch slump.

> 8. do you plan on continuing this WOE, even after you meet your goal?

I do hope to continue this WOE for life. I've been following LC for
two years now and find it very easy to stick to. It helps to control my
cravings for sweets, which is my crutch, for junk such as candy, cakes and
doughnuts. Pre LC I could eat a whole box of candy that someone gave us at
work. Now it can sit on the desk and and it doesn't even bother me.

No. My weight gain *could* be partly due to previously taken medication
(a know side-effect)

Better than anything that I'd tried previously (excepting high protein,
but that had bad side-effects)

Headaches. Excess urinating (though not "full flow") during the night.

Yes.

Well, I thought myself overweight as a teen, but looking back at pictures
now I don't think I was. I'd say that really being overweight happened from
my early to mid 20's on.

> 2. where do you tend to carry your fat?

Hips and thighs mostly.

> 3. does your family tend to be overweight as well?

Yes, definitely - extended as well as immediate family. One set of cousins
are thin, everyone else has to fight their weight constantly.

> 4. are you diabetic/pre-diabetic?

Not that I know of. Nobody in the family (immediate and extended) has ever
developed it either, despite years of obesity.

> 5. do you have other "obesity related" health concerns (cholesterol, BP,
> etc)

No. Even at my heaviest, I still had normal BP and normal cholesterol.
When thinner, I had/have low BP (normally 90/70 range). Also no heart
disease in my family on either side, though my mother is now on BP meds (in
her late 60's). All my grandparents except one (who died of pneumonia at
age 54) lived past age 75, one over 80 and one to almost 90 (and the one who
lived longest was the heaviest of the four - he was significantly overweight
from at least age 30 on, based on photos).

> 6. how well does LC work for you for weight loss?

Better than anything I have *ever* tried. Better than I thought possible.

> 7. how well does LC work for you for other health reasons?

Not sure what you mean - I'm not really doing it for other health reasons,
but I have seen some other health benefits since starting LC. Namely the
almost complete disappearance of acid reflux (GERD) symptoms. That has been
a huge bonus and is enough by itself to make me want to continue with LC
even if I never lost another pound on it. It wasn't a benefit I'd heard
associated with LC prior to starting, so it played no part in my initial
decision to go LC. It wasn't until I heard others here and in RL saying
they'd experienced the same that I realized that acid reflux symptoms either
being considerably lessened or eliminated entirely is a pretty common side
bonus to an LC WOE.

There have been other nice benefits as well - better sleep, improved overall
mood (less prone to depression and letting things get me down), and more
energy. However, I'm not sure how much of those improvements are due to LC
and how much just due to taking vitamins regularly (something I wasn't doing
prior to LC).

> 8. do you plan on continuing this WOE, even after you meet your goal?

Definitely. I plan on continuing this WOE for the rest of my life,
actually. Yes, I will have off-plan foods now and again, but not often and
not overdoing it when I do. I never had a problem with binge eating even
when not trying to control my weight, and I've found even during OWL that I
can eat an off-plan meal without getting completely derailed.

Always, and I mean always (though I have two photos where this appears
not to be the case) have been overweight. The first photo is me just
after being released from the hospital around age 2.5, the second is 7th
grade, just before things got strange again body-wise, and even then, I
was square and large, though one can see bones.

> 2. where do you tend to carry your fat?
Belly, hips - I am the traditional pear-shape, though just prior to
going on Atkins, I began to shift to apple, which worried me a great
deal.

>
> 3. does your family tend to be overweight as well?
To a person, yes. We have two different body shapes - square and boxy
large and round large. I'm a square/boxy large, with a waist.
>
> 4. are you diabetic/pre-diabetic?
Probably. My mother was extremely brittle, and couldn't control her
diabetes well. I have definitely many signs of hyperinsulinemia and
insulin resistance.

Blood-pressure issues, yes, but only since I was on megace supposedly to
control uterine hyperplasia. That appeared to be the catalyst.

I've lost 85 pounds, but am currently stalled. I'd say that's a success
by my standards, though I'm still obese. Still working on it, too.
>

Great - but again, note that the BP thing appears to have been caused by
some damage, so it's still there.

Absolutely. I don't ever want to be what I was before. If I never see a
"goal weight" I'm still better off.

I was slightly overweight in high school, but got steadily bigger through
college and graduate school. In law school I lost some weight, and then put
it back on.

> 2. where do you tend to carry your fat?

Butt, hips, and thighs principally, but really everywhere. I carry it
"well" - I still have a pronounced waist and folks rarely believe I weigh as
much as I do. But anyone who says I don't look overweight is lying - I
don't carry it *that* well.

Some do, some don't.

> 4. are you diabetic/pre-diabetic?

Not diabetic; I don't believe I'm pre-diabetic but I believe I could be soon
enough if I don't get my act together now. I'm 32, and my grandmother - who
I think I looked a lot like me - was a type II diabetic. She died (15 years
ago today, as it happens) from heart disease.

To a point. I don't have a concrete plan for maintenance - it's still a
long way off - but I imagine doing something like eating the way I am eating
now most of the time, but allowing myself a little more leeway from time to
time.

No, I was a tomboy. Played alot of sports. Stayed slim from much
activities I think. I started gaining weight after a car accident,
that layed me up for quite awhile. I started packing it on 10 yrs.

In the lower belly, and hips.
>

Yes and no. Some take after my Moms side, which are short and fat.
Then some take after my fathers side, which is tall and thin. I got my
dads genes on that. I have 2 older sisters that are twins, five foot
one. They weigh around four hundred apiece. Then I have a sister who
is my height, five feet five, and she is lucky to stay around one
hundred pounds.

My blood pressure was getting a little high, before Atkins. Its great
now.

So far so good. Found it very hard to stop addictions in the past.
Once I set my mind to get bette healthwise, and determined..It was
easier than I thought it would be.

Its helped alot with Fibro symptoms. But not all of them. Its helped
depression, irritable bowel, mood swings, bladder probs. Its not
helped the pain. I got more allergies too.

I have been overweight since I was about 7 years old.

> 2. where do you tend to carry your fat?
Everywhere between my neck and my knees. Especially around my
waist and thighs, it is really concentrated there.
>
> 3. does your family tend to be overweight as well?
Almost all of my father's side of the family, which is who I
resemble feature and physically wise, are extremely overweight. My
father's parents weigh well over 400lbs. My aunts, uncles, and father
are all fairly overweight as well.
>
> 4. are you diabetic/pre-diabetic?
I'm not but I'm afraid it may be in the cards for me since both of
my grandmothers have type 2 diabetes. My doctor highly recommended
the Atkins diet for me when she learned about my family history of
diabetes.
>

No, but I'm still fairly young so I am very afraid that if I don't
get my weight under control now that I will be facing some serious
health problems when I get older.
>
> 6. how well does LC work for you for weight loss?
So far I've lost 32lbs but I've stalled recently. Of course it is
my fault cause I have not been as diligent as I should be and as I was
when I was losing weight so well.
>
> 7. how well does LC work for you for other health reasons?
When I eat carbs, especially fried foods or heavy starches, my
stomach gets very upset and low carb helps prevent that.
>

Most definitely, I'm afraid of what sugars and starches will do to
my health when I am older if I don't cut down on them now.

I've always been overweight - well, ever since I can remember...

> 2. where do you tend to carry your fat?

Gut, chips (a.k.a. "love handles"), and on the inner parts of my upper legs
(which just won't go away).

> 3. does your family tend to be overweight as well?

On one side of the family, most definitely. The other side of the family is
as thin as a sheet of paper.

> 4. are you diabetic/pre-diabetic?

Don't know, and I hope I never find out.

> 5. do you have other "obesity related" health concerns (cholesterol, BP,

Sore feet, bad knees - nothing too serious.

> 6. how well does LC work for you for weight loss?

Excellent - I'm almost down 50 lbs.

> 7. how well does LC work for you for other health reasons?

Well, I'm not tired all the time, like I used to be. My knees and feet have
been feeling much better lately, now that I think about it.

> 8. do you plan on continuing this WOE, even after you meet your goal?

I'm actually going to switch to the GI diet before I hit my goal - unless I
make it to my goal before I move. I've got a new job in Alberta, and I'll
be living/working at a resort. I don't think I'll be able to continue
eating LC while I'm there. The next best thing, IMHO, is the GI diet. It's
worked really well for a couple of my uncles.

On and off, thick and thin periods through childhood and adolescence. I was

Good questions. I'll enjoy reading everyone's responses, to see how differently
we're all affected by this WOE and what differences we came into this with.

I've been overweight since I was about 8 years old.

>2. where do you tend to carry your fat?

In the middle. Stomach, upper arms, upper back, thighs, upper arms. I'm really
oddly shaped. Me no likey.

>3. does your family tend to be overweight as well?

Both my parents. My (fraternal) twin sister is actually a little underweight.
And about six inches shorter. And blonde. Which is so fun for me. <g>

>4. are you diabetic/pre-diabetic?

I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic when I was at my heaviest weight (when I was a
teenager)

>5. do you have other "obesity related" health concerns (cholesterol, BP,
>etc)

Luckily, no, although I've been having some chronic hip and knee pain that I
think might be related.

>6. how well does LC work for you for weight loss?
>

Really very well. It's the only change-in-eating I've ever really tried,
though. I never did low-fat. Just went from compulsive overeating to low carb.

>7. how well does LC work for you for other health reasons?

I THINK it's helped the sleep a little bit. I don't sleep at better hours
(damned this DSPS) but I do seem to sleep more soundly when I do sleep. And
ditching the caffeine (on Atkins Plan's recommendation) certainly helped with
that!

And the depression that came with binging is gone. G-o-n-e gone. No binging, no
depression. No deprivation feeling, no binging. Good stuff. I think the memory
of the depression helps me from binging, too.

TOM also seems easier in terms of bloating/pain, although the hunger/cravings
are more pronounced because I don't give into them. (I guess I didn't notice
them before because I would just EAT when I wanted chocolate. Now I drink a lot
of water.)

Stomach. Bad karma for all the cakes and icecream I stuff into it, I
guess (one serving size for me used to be a 8 inch triple layered cake,
or a liter of icecream). Everybody laughed (jealously that I had been
able to eat all that and they couldn't) said I had it coming when I
became chubby. Then I started lowcarbing, and they looked at the stuff I
ate (while losing inches) in awe and were still jealous, hehe.

Weight loss not the goal. Fat loss was and LC made it possible to go
from 16% to 10% (defined by tape measures).

> 7. how well does LC work for you for other health reasons?

I love it. Better awareness of what I put into the system, no aches when
exercising too much, because I get the protein I need.

> 8. do you plan on continuing this WOE, even after you meet your goal?

Less strict now, but still looking at meat/eggs/veggies/etc (and mostly
using legumes as the carb in my dinner) as nutrition, and everything
else as supplementary treats.

I have always been large, as in muscular, but did not start
putting on much excess fat until my mid-twenties.

My torso. Nowadays I mostly carry it in my head.

Yes, both sides of the family.

Much tested, not diagnosed.

Ambiguous question. Of course I have concerns, but I think
you are asking what, if any, symptoms I might be
experiencing. If the latter then heartburn, shortness of
breath, lack of energy are all conditions related to obesity
that I experienced in the past.

> 6. how well does LC work for you for weight loss?

Very well thus far. Down almost 90 pounds. I see no reason
that I would be unable to sustain this so long as I remain
committed.

Well, the weight loss has certainly proven to be a positive
influence on my state of mind.

I *thought* I was fat when I was a teenager, but looking back at
pictures, I just had large tits. Had a nice flat belly under them and
rode my bike 20-30 miles a day.

I gained most of my weight in college/grad school... as a single mom,
I worked insane hours. Being awake 20 hours per day meant at least a
fourth meal every day... and while I worked hard, 90% of the work was
sitting on my butt.

>2. where do you tend to carry your fat?

Belly... I am apple-shaped to a ridiculous degree. I have to buy
men's pants cause I have no hips.

>3. does your family tend to be overweight as well?

My father's side is fat and Italian. My mother's side is slim and
WASP.

Apparently, my siblings and I are all more Italian than WASP.

>4. are you diabetic/pre-diabetic?

Yup, been so for a loooooong time. My dad was diabetic. At age 20,
pregnant with my daughter, I was borderline on the GTT. Less than a
decade later, I was over the border and fully living in diabetic-land.
Both sisters have since been diagnosed as well.

>5. do you have other "obesity related" health concerns (cholesterol,
BP,
etc)

Not obesity-related, per se. Smoking. Strength issues (or lack
thereof). In my recent past, extremely serious depresson issues. In
the more distant past, very serious "dyfucntional fmaily" stuff.

>6. how well does LC work for you for weight loss?

Pretty well.

>7. how well does LC work for you for other health reasons?

Variable. It is not working as well as in the past. My blood sugars
are way too damned high. Apparently, my diabetes has progressed
significantly.

>8. do you plan on continuing this WOE, even after you meet your
goal?

Yup. This time is very different for me than past times because it's
about my goals in life, not about just losing weight or controlling my
sugar. I feel about low-carbing and exercising the way I felt about
college and grad school - this is what I'm doing to prepare for the
life I want. Just as I didn't stop learning when I left college, I'm
not going to stop low-carbing.

My reaction to carbs has changed tremendously. My "planned cheats"
never feel "worth it" to me. I have basically decided to not bother
with the carbs anymore... if I let msyelf eat anything I want once a
month as a "vacation" from ym diet, well... it turns out that carbs
aren't what I want.

Carby food doesn't seem like food anymore. If I'm hungry and look at
the shelves in my kitchen, I don't "see" the boxes of pasta. They're
just not "food" to me.

I cook and bake higher-carb foods for my family, but it feels more
like doing crafts than making food. I'm no more likely to eat the
stuff I make them than the I am to eat the peppermint bath salts I
made as Christmas gifts.

I'm *planning* for a permanent low-carb lifestyle. I have no idea
what level of carbs I will settle on in the long run, but I have
invested time planning what foods to raise to have various maintenance
diets. Within a year or two, I will be working much more hard
physically, and I plan for a much higher calories consumption in that
lifestyle, but *not* a much higher carb intake.

This is my life - I shall spend it on the things I want to do, the
people I want to spend time with, the books I want to read, the
gardens I want to grow... not on a pile of mashed potatoes.

I was at a 'normal' weight until I was about 9 or 10 years old. At
that point, I had severe intractable eczema that was causing me a
significant amount of pain.

When all other treatments had failed, I was offered a course of oral
corticosteroids, with the warning that it would almost certainly cause
me to 'blow up' but that the weight would disappear with a sensible,
low-fat diet and exercise program once I stopped taking the steroids
(a 6 month treatment).

The steroids worked - the eczema disappeared and while I've had
outbreaks since they have never been as bad as those childhood ones.
However, they weren't kidding when they said I'd blow up - but the
weight never came off again no matter what I did.

>2. where do you tend to carry your fat?

Belly. Definitely belly.

>3. does your family tend to be overweight as well?

My mother was also obese - she died aged 59 of a heart attack in her
sleep. My father was plump but had no trouble losing weight whenever
he felt the need. My sisters were both thin to the point of being
gaunt although they eat well - but one was put on steroids 5 years ago
and has not been able to lose weight again since. My brother is also
extremely thin. My children are also tending towards slender although
the 9 year old is heavy according to the scales because she's well
muscled.

>4. are you diabetic/pre-diabetic?

Diabetic since Halloween of 2001. I take Metformin.

>5. do you have other "obesity related" health concerns (cholesterol, BP,
>etc)

Yes, cholesterol and blood pressure are both elevated. I am on
medication for each.

>6. how well does LC work for you for weight loss?

I lost, VERY slowly, not quite 50 lb in the first 14 months. Then I
stalled for several years, then regained some of that without going
'off' the diet.

>7. how well does LC work for you for other health reasons?

It controls my diabetes well. My asthma is better. My eczema is
better. I have the energy to be active (walk 6 days/week, gym twice a
week, pool twice a week) despite my weight which was NOT true at the
same weight while high-carb, low-fatting.

>8. do you plan on continuing this WOE, even after you meet your goal?

Yes. As a diabetic I will need to continue controlling my carb
intake.

ROFL - no part of the Atkins plan recommends slipping on an icy sidewalk and
hitting your head.

None. What part of 'he slipped on the ice and hit his head' do YOU not
understand?

> But, I wont worry about you, because the American Funeral Association

Hmm - so I take it from this that you believe that staying overweight is
somehow healthier than cutting sugar and starch from your diet? I've seen
lots of research that backs up the negative health concerns that come along
with obesity - would you care to publish your results of the serious health
risks that come from cutting out sugar and starch? No? Didn't think so.

Sure thing - stop sitting on your ass in front of the television all day,
and you won't see any. Go back to school like a good little kiddie and
leave Usenet to the grownups.

Overweight as teen, until about 7th grade, when I started jogging and then

I was very thin. I'm still not technically overweight, but I have a chunk of
extra weight in my hips and thighs that I need to get rid of. I don't think of
myself as an overweight person, I think of myself as a thin person who screwed
up and is now correcting her mistakes.
>
>2. where do you tend to carry your fat?

In order: hips, thighs, lower abdomen. Classic pear shape, in other words.

>3. does your family tend to be overweight as well?

I don't have a single overweight relative, though a few have added unnecessary
pounds that they then subsequently lost. I'm losing 26 pounds, my mom lost 30,
my brother lost 15, etc. So there's a pattern of "thin people screwing up" in
middle age.
>
>4. are you diabetic/pre-diabetic?

No.

My blood pressure is borderline high, though my cholesterol is excellent. My
doctor has been wanting to put me on BP drugs, and I told her I'd get it down
myself. I think I've accomplished that with this WOE, though I don't know for
sure.
>
>6. how well does LC work for you for weight loss?

I'm thrilled with the way this is working! I lost most of the weight fairly
quickly, and I have yet to go hungry.
>
>7. how well does LC work for you for other health reasons?

I am convinced my BP is down. I feel healthier and less tense, and I have more
energy, too. I think I was poisoning myself with sugar.

>8. do you plan on continuing this WOE, even after you meet your goal?

Absolutely! I'm not insane enough to go back to the way I was eating. It was
destructive and I'm slowly losing my taste for those foods anyway. I didn't go
with a set diet -- Atkins or SB -- I wrote my own. And when I did that, the
first thing I did was write what I wanted my maintenance eating habits to be.
Then I wrote my own induction/phase one equivalent, followed by a transition
plan, which is what I'm following now.

Always been overweight-obese. Since third grade, when I had my tonsills

skinny).

No. Had blood work done to make sure all is well with this WOE and it is.

LC-WOE has worked for me very well. This has been the only 'diet' I've been

So if you don't want to hear about it why come to a low carb group? There
are tens of thousands of groups on Usenet on thousands of subjects, if you
have even half a brain there should be a few of them that interest you.

Awesome for a couple of years, but nothing for about 13 months since I
gained 30 lbs on a carb month. Can't lose it, even doing induction
for that amount of time. (10 or less carbs per day for the last 8
months, and haven't lost a pound.)

Hell yeah. I know what crappy food can do to you, now. I still have
my cheat days, but only 3-4 times a year. However, I am really sorry
I did that carb month, now. My gut popped back out, and it won't go
away!!!

I began to gain weight at about age 13, but from 13-30 I was slightly
overweight, the typical female who would love to lose 20-30 pounds. After an
injury at age 30 I began to gain serious weight!

hips, butt and belly.

Interesting. My two grandfathers were both more or less normal weight. My
grandmothers both rather heavy. My parents were both quite heavy people
however their siblings (a sister on my mom's side, 2 sister's and a brother
on my dad's) were all skinny as rails. I'm very heavy, and my 2 sisters are
both rail-thin also.

Just diagnosed as Type 2 this month, both my parents also type 2.

Cholesterol ok, just diagnosed with high BP this month too, and am hoping it
will go down as my weight does.

> 6. how well does LC work for you for weight loss?

Usually it's the only thing that has worked up to a point. First time around
I lost 80 pounds in a year, then for the next almost 2 years did not lose
another ounce even though I still had nearly 100 pounds to go. Eventually I
got discouraged, went off the diet, and gained all the weight back. This
go-round I started LC with the new year. I didn't use a scale, didn't count
calories (and ate a TON) but watched carbs. I know I lost weight as clothes
are *much* looser and I'm fitting into things I have not been able to wear
for a year or two. After the diabetes diagnosis I decided to get on the
scale and have a baseline, and also drastically cut back on my calories
(when I started LC in January I realize I was eating about 3000-4000
calories a day, I'm now doing about 2000). Since I've started weighing
myself and watching calories as well as carbs I have not lost any weight. It
does not seem as easy as last time.

> 7. how well does LC work for you for other health reasons?
>
Tremendously! I no longer have constant nausea, constant diarrhea, constant
vomiting, constant gastric reflux - all staples of my high-carb diet (they
appear, through elimination, to be gluten related). Also I have more pep and
energy, am more mentally alert, and don't suffer the bouts of depression I
get on carby diets.
> 8. do you plan on continuing this WOE, even after you meet your goal?

I fully hope to be in the WOE the rest of my life.
